By being Kingdom Minded, we must incorporate Jesus into everything that we do. We must always seek His wisdom, His guidance, and His direction. As adults, we tend to do these things, but even as…

A Glimpse at My Life and Works Through Poetry and Prose
This document represents the evolution of my life from those first days in Birmingham, Alabama, to the journey to North Dakota, Minnesota, Syracuse, Princess Anne Maryland, Pittsburgh, and finally back to Birmingham. My story is evidence of your story’s value, in telling the whole story of our amazing survival in this country. Our collective stories answer the questions raised by Vincent Harding when he asked, “How [amid] such death and suffering could we find so much strength to love, so much determination to live, fight on, and be free? In permanent and grueling exile, how could a people dance and…

Margaret Smith Marston, Author
Margaret was born into a family of storytellers rooted in the values of service to others and working for justice.
She has always been a writer: volunteering for the school PTA, creating the family newsletter, writing briefs as a lawyer, and making up silly stories and songs with and for her children. She worked as a reading teacher and an attorney before deciding to commit her time to raising her three children.
As a mother, Margaret was intentional and instilled values of kindness, compassion, and putting oneself in another person’s shoes. Her children often heard “remember to be kind because you don’t know what another person is dealing with in their life.” She now works with young children weekdays as an after-school care teacher.
Margaret is thrilled to share “Eureka, Paprika!” an imaginary tale offering entertainment, humor, and encouragement to be our best selves.

Poetic Justice
About twenty five years ago, I discovered that poetry was an excellent aid in the nightly task of getting my young daughter to sleep, so that I could finally join my wife for dinner. My tattered Norton Anthology, saved from a college survey course on poetry, proved a valuable resource, and I soon learned which poets and poems were more effective in this endeavor. Chief among them was Tennyson, and, notably, his “Crossing the Bar.” There was just something about its “sunset” and “evening star,” and its rhythm, that helped her sail off into her dreams. Over time, the thought…

“Though he slay me yet will I trust him.” Job 15:13
When I look at all the seasons that take place on the earth, they are reflective of all the seasons we go through in our life. We have winter, spring, summer, and fall. Everybody loves spring when things are blossoming, blooming, and growing. Everybody looks forward to summer when everything is bright and cheery and restful. Folks even enjoy fall when things are changing. But it’s hard to find someone who loves the winter or who likes winter. My faith is rooted in knowing that even while it has been winter in my life spring is still coming. We can trust Him even when we don’t like what life is serving, we can trust Him even when we are at the crossroads in life trying to figure out is this God or is this the enemy. God is worth the wait! Have the faith of Job and in spite of your condition resolve in heart that “Though he slay me, yet I will trust him.”
Shirlene has three daughters and six grandchildren and lives a full and active life.

Victoria Snider
Victoria Snider is a longtime nurse who began to experiment with painting and poetry in 2017. Growing up with a painter/poet father, a talented seamstress mother and a younger sister who excelled as a miniaturist and at technical drawing was a bit intimidating. Thus, a wonderful and ongoing career as a nurse ensued.
Sensing a growing need for a creative outlet, she began her mostly self-taught personal quest to discover and nurture her own artistic spark late in life. It has brought much fulfillment.
As author and illustrator of her first self published book, Koi Meets World, she has decided to share part of this journey with you.
Koi Meets World
This book is dedicated to all those who could, would, and should find their voices. Included within this book is the 2017 experimental painting that became the catalyst for this book. The lines on the pages of poetry are there for you to write or draw your own thoughts and ideas. The paintings in this book are a form of acrylic pour painting. A relatively thin background of black paint was first applied to a square canvas. Next, small puddles of the three contrasting colors are layered along the perimeter of the canvas. Now the fun begins! The canvas is…

History of Birmingham’s Endangered Watercress Darter
This is the story of an endangered fish, the Watercress Darter, Etheostoma nuchale Howell and Caldwell 1965. It is a beautiful, multicolored, two-inch (=5.08 cm) fish that lives only in five limestone springs of Birmingham, Jefferson County, Alabama, and its suburbs. I have had a fifty-nine-year relationship with this fish. Thus, I find it necessary to write this account in the first person. This is a personal but factual account, based on my copious collection of photographs, field collections, scientific literature, newspaper clippings, meetings, internet searches, and e-mail exchanges. I have tried my best to be accurate in the facts surrounding this fish. Any mistakes, however, are mine.
