Out of the Ashes

Amid the crumbling ruins of post-war Berlin, my mother learned to navigate a landscape where resilience was not a choice but a necessity. The grandeur of the city had been reduced to scattered debris, yet life persisted in the most unexpected ways.

Her days were marked by stark contrasts—the harshness of ration queues offset by the fragile beauty of wildflowers blooming defiantly in the cracks of the rubble. Scavenging for remnants of a normal life, she uncovered treasures among the ruins: a tarnished locket, a charred book, an old piano whose broken keys still sang of hope. These small, poignant moments stitched together a childhood overshadowed by history, yet rich with the quiet power of survival.
