- M. W. Moore

]]>Michael W. Moore is a native of the Birmingham, Alabama metropolitan area and nearby communities. When growing up, he devoted his formative years to escaping outdoors whenever possible to fish, explore the woods, fill empty Mason jars with wriggling creatures, and wade shallow creeks in search of minnows, salamanders, tadpoles, and whatever else couldn’t escape his clutches. He always wondered what was behind the next bend in the creek, how clouds hung together while drifting through a blue sky, and whether he could climb the highest branch of a sycamore tree just to catch one more singing cicada before sundown.
Michael retired in late 2016 from a long career in the health insurance and employee benefits industry. Since his retirement, he has devoted more time to his writing pursuits. This anthology of his poetic works is his third book to be published in the last two years. His two previous books were fiction novels, Twice Upon a Swing in 2019 and The False Detective in 2020.
Michael and his wife Cathy currently live in Hoover, Alabama but enjoy vacations to the mountains, to the beaches along the Gulf coast, and to a nearby lake cabin. They’re especially fond of opportunities to spend more time with friends and family.

]]>James Bradford is an attorney in Birmingham, Alabama. His previous verse-writing has elicited a few laughs and faint applause at a number of birthday and anniversary parties, after-rehearsal dinners, and retirement receptions, over the years. With this volume, he has high hopes of being elevated to the position of “Poet Law-reate of Jefferson County.” Depending on how well it is received, his next project may be to rewrite the Alabama Constitution as a series of sonnets.

]]>Real “characters” are not hard to find in the rural South, and during his life, Joey has found a bunch of them. “Real Stories from a Fictitious Man” is a sampling of Joey McClure’s short stories and though it meanders, this original work is mostly Southern in content and country in derivation. It is the culmination of memories, encounters, and the imagination of a Southern boy who, as a grown man, found delight in putting those into his own words. His favorite people were always the tellers-of-tales, better known in rural Alabama, as liars. His recollection of fragments of their stories, as well as his actual experiences, were the resource materials, but as he says, “Most are my own lies.” Filtered throughout, you will also encounter several of his poems (which are mostly songs he has written) and a scant few of his photographs from his vast library.

]]>Joey was born Joseph Hyman McClure, Jr. on April 24, 1952. The first 13 years of his life was spent in a little white house sitting on the line between Coosa County and Talladega County on U.S. Highway 231. The rest of his childhood was spent on Anniston Circle in Sylacauga Alabama until he left for a stint at Jacksonville State University. Though he was not very studious, he first found enjoyment in writing late in high school, and it eventually became one of his many great passions of life — along with grandchildren, photography, and automobiles.
For the past 45 plus years, Joey’s professional life centered around redevelopment, renovation, restoration and generally saving Birmingham’s historic downtown buildings. His first book was a collection of jokes he compiled over the years called Joey’s Nasty Collection of Jokes, and his next book will be The Christmas Pixie which should be out before next Christmas, subject to production of illustrations.
You may contact him at [email protected] . Some of his photography is currently on display at Bistro 218, 218 Twentieth Street North, downtown Birmingham. His famous Christmas Train Village can be seen at 208 Twentieth Street North, also in downtown Birmingham.

]]>Different Vibrations is a collection of poetry written from the perspective of different kinds of people. I met these people and learned these stories while homeless and/or working as a taxi driver, an occupation like that of bartender, that assumes the roll of psychiatrist and confidant for his/her patrons. Individually poems could be categorized as comedic, adventurous, religious, etc. so it was not until I read them all together that I realized I was writing a book of love poetry. Each poem collected here reflects some form of love (eros, storge, philia, agape), and written in the voice of some beautiful broken person I have met. Looking from the outside in and other times, from within out, I learned that each person is trying to convey the most beauty out of their current love learning experience. Some of these are dark and rigid while others are bright and smooth. The truest beauty found, however, comes from the collection of all these moments, of all these pieces, of all our love. Journeying through these different vibrations is the substance of a life.

“For me, writing is a way to bring all I experience in this life closer to true understanding. I write the things I have learned in this life OR the wisdom my spirit intercepts. Sometimes it is logical, sometimes it is painful, and other times it just feels good. But my writing is truth, and truth is healing!”
