Hugues Batsielilit, Ph.D.

In his travels, Hugues Fidele Batsielilit has worked with health clinics and public health programs in professional capacities observing the intersectionality of the human condition, government, technology, politics, and disease. His observations have provided first-hand knowledge of how healthcare systems and health outcomes are impacted when proper consideration is not given to the needs of citizens and governments do not prioritize health.

Dr. Batsielilit is also a recipient of The Literary Titan Book Award (Silver Award) in 2021.

Diagnosis, Treatment & Prevention Strategies — Too Little, Too Late

Cancer has become a major cause of mortality on the continent of Africa. According to the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), in 2018 Africa saw 811,200 new incidences of cancer with 534,000 deaths. By 2020, deaths due to cancer had increased by 45% in Sub-Saharan Africa alone. These facts paint a grim picture of the impact of cancer on Africans.

Lack of modern equipment that is well maintained, inadequate numbers of oncologists and pathologists, coupled with patients seeking diagnosis and treatment too late to be beneficial, are but a few of the challenges the continent faces in stemming the tide of the disease.

Dr. Hugues F. Batsielilit explores the issues bearing some responsibility for the rise in cancer incidence and mortality, and offers salient suggestions for improvement of services, prevention education, diagnosis, and treatment.

COVID-19 - Africa, Haiti, and The U.S. Virgin Islands
COVID-19: Africa, Haiti, and the U.S. Virgin Islands

Until 2019, most people had not heard of coronaviruses. The SARS-CoV-2 strain of coronavirus that causes COVID-19 has wreaked havoc in personal lives, disrupted school attendance and the social and emotional development of children; been at the core of political debates, and even caused fights. It has proven to be the most divisive public health disaster of our time.

Although having fewer cases and deaths than other countries and continents, Africa, Haiti, and the U. S. Virgin Islands have experienced difficulties due to compromised and insufficient healthcare infrastructure, hospitals, and clinics still in the throes of recovery from natural disasters, and funding that is never enough. COVID-19 has presented challenges to the economic and social survival of these areas, that may take years to overcome. Lessons learned from this first wave of the virus, will be critical to recovery and successful response to any other pandemics that may occur.

Dr. Batsielilit, covers the breath of challenges that surfaced with COVID-19, and offers salient recommendations to address another wave, possible variants, and any future pandemic that may occur.
